Dark Skies Stargazing
Lake District Castle Inn Hotel offers not just a warm Cumbrian welcome and comfortable 4-star comforts but a front-row seat to one of the darkest, most star-studded skies. With minimal light pollution and expansive, open views of Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw Mountain, our hotel is perfectly placed for unforgettable evenings under the stars
Cumbria ranks among the very best dark-sky destinations in the UK, on a clear night, thousands of stars are visible, including dazzling views of the Milky Way. Its secluded landscaps of fells, forests and lakes shield against urban glow, giving you a truly immersive celestial experience. Dark sky tourism is increasingly popular locally, helping extend cosy all-year stays into the quieter seasons.

Tips for a Magical Stargazing Experience
Give Your Eyes Time – Allow about 20 minutes for your eyes to adapt fully to the dark, skip using bright torches in that time.
Use Red Lights – Preserve your night vision with a red-filter torch or by painting a standard torch with red nail polish.
Stay Cosy – Even summer nights can be chilly. Bring layers, warm hats, blankets or snuggle into a beanbag for comfort.
Bring Binoculars – Binoculars reveal far more detail than the naked eye, although not as powerful as a telescope, they’re handy and easy to use.
Use Star-Mapping Apps – Smartphone apps can point out constellations, planets and more by using your location and direction. To preserve your night vision, keep your phone screen brightness at its lowest setting.
Plan Around the Moon – A full moon is beautiful but its glow washes out fainter stars. For true dark-sky viewing, choose nights with little moonlight.
